What is a ceramic coating?
Ceramic coatings offer a thick hard-wearing layer of protection that bonds to your vehicle’s clear coat to provide superior levels of gloss, dirt repellency, abrasion resistance, UV protection, and can help to preserve your vehicle’s paint system for years to come. Ceramic coatings are not a wax or sealant that will wash away or break down over a short period of time. Instead, the coating bonds to the factory paint system to become a sacrificial layer that will not delaminate or discolor. A single layer of ceramic coating is about 100 times thicker than a typical wax or sealant and is much like putting a layer of glass over your paint. The coating bonding process will also strengthen the vehicle’s paint system to provide higher surface tension and superior durability on the existing surface. The coating will then effectively prevent damage that would otherwise affect the factory paint layers from contamination like tree sap, bird lime and insect etching. Unlike traditional waxes or sealants that must be reapplied within weeks or months, ceramic coating durability can be measured in years depending on the product you choose. The durability of a ceramic coating will deliver the best coating paint protection the market has to offer and give you peace of mind that your pride and joy will look beautiful for years to come.
How is a ceramic coating installed?
To perform a professional installation of a ceramic coating, I start with an intensive wash process to completely decontaminate the paint and prepare it for polishing. Some customers might not think this is necessary if, for example, the customer’s vehicle is new. However, every car that will be coated must be completely decontaminated or the ceramic coating will not properly adhere to the paint and you won’t get the protection you paid for with your hard earned money. Although new cars look clean, they are generally not as even a brand new car can have embedded metal filings (i.e. rail dust from transportation) in the paint as well as other contamination that you can’t see with the naked eye. After an intensive decontamination, the paint should be carefully polished to remove surface defects like wash marring and light scratches so the paint looks the best it can before it is protected. Also, some coatings require a specific polish to be used in the preparation process as the polish may have a catalyst which helps the coating bond to the factory paint system. After polishing, the paint is wiped with an alcohol-based solution to ensure it is completely clean and ready for protection. The coating is then carefully applied to the surface, allowed to cure for the appropriate time period and then leveled to ensure it covers all exterior painted surfaces and that all the coating transfer solution is removed. Proper leveling of the coating is critical to avoid high spots and ensure a professional installation that will last for years to come.
